Kwon Jiyong a.k.a G-Dragon
Let me start by saying, it was very hard for me to decide how to start this text.
I do not write appreciation texts, or have I ever written fan letters, or do I believe I’ll come with some amazing point of view that hasn’t been said about you already. You’ve been praised, criticized, awed and analyzed from the beats of your music to your actions to the clothes you wear and we keep doing it, over and over again. Perhaps I’ll ask, why, why is that so? Why is G-Dragon a name that causes such a reaction?
There’s a certain kind of allure this man possesses, I can’t deny it. All great artists have something that makes them unique, what makes the public want to know more about them, and yes, this man named Kwon Jiyong, G-Dragon, certainly has that allure.
To you, Jiyong, music is everything. You’ve said that. You’ve said you haven’t thought of any other profession that working with music. I believe that. I believe certain people were made to do certain things, and you, Jiyong, were made to do music. I think so.
“The only thing I have to do in life is die; everything else is a choice…including breathing.”
This is my favorite quote by you. I think this tells a lot about you too. Life is a series of choices, life itself is a choice. And you, Jiyong, you’ve made your choice, from the way you make your music and the way you dress.
And I do love the way you dress. I love that you’re not afraid to try out new things. I love how your style is like a statement, saying ‘there should be no rules in fashion, I’m free to wear whatever I want’. Your androgynous looks make you look great in whatever you wear, whether it is men’s or women’s wear. A sign of a true fashionista and fashion icon. You inspire me to express myself through fashion, thank you for that.
You’re a chameleon in the world of music and fashion. Unpredictable. You’re a transparent color, an empty canvas that you yourself recreate over and over again. A renaissance man in the way you think, always looking for the new, discarding the past, and never ever wanting to be boring. You write your songs with your heart on your sleeve, every hardship written in ink on your skin.
But it is not just your music, or your fashion, that I like about you. It is who you are. You’re one of the most sincere, wonderful persons I’ve heard of, and why? Because you bow 90 degrees for everyone, even younger artists, a sign of great politeness in Korea. Because when reading comments people that have worked with you have made, they admire your professionalism and what a great person you are to work with. Because when I see you in interviews and shows, you easily burst into laughter, you smile brightly and you’re not afraid to show honest reactions. Because of all the hearts you have moved with your music, all around the world.
To me, great artists are the people who have their own style, work hard, and are kind. This is because honest emotions and kindness are things that people all around connect the best to.
And you, Kwon Jiyong, you certainly are unique. You’ve proven countless times you work hard. And most of all, you’re a kind, honest person. And this, I think, is what made you a star, and what will give you even greater fortunes in the future. And this is why I’m writing this letter about you.
Everything of this is why you have that allure. It is why we come back, wanting more. It is why you’re hated and loved. But even when you’re hated, you’ll always fight back, doing things the way you want to. You stand up and say:
“Kill them with success and bury them with a big smile.”
But what I want to say is, I think you deserve every good thing you get Jiyong. As long as you work hard, are kind, and stay who you are. We love you Kwon Jiyong, because you are Kwon Jiyong. I hope you never forget the passion for music in your heart, and your fun, loving and carefree attitude, for they’ll be a great source of strength for you for years to come. And you’ll always have a special place in my heart for being such an extraordinary person.
To put it simply, I’m glad I got to know you, Kwon Jiyong.
